At the outset, 13-year-old Beth (Christina Ricci) and her mother travel from Los Angeles to Wheaton, Washington, where they plan to settle. Bored at first with her new surroundings, Beth soon meets another 13-year-old, social outcast Jody Salerno (Anna Chlumsky). Warned to stay away from Jody, Beth nevertheless develops a close friendship with her. Both girls' fathers have died, but Jody's mother drinks to forget her loss, while Beth's mother reaches out to help her daughter adjust to not having a father. The townspeople consider Jody a thief and a liar never having heard her side of the story. The girls' grand adventure takes place on June 21, 1983, as they explore Bear Mountain and its old mining trails searching for Molly Morgan's lost gold mine. An adventurer, Jody teaches city-girl Beth how to adapt to life in the woods, on the mining trails, and on the water. Suspenseful and entertaining, GOLD DIGGERS fits that rare category of being an excellent family film.

Produced by veteran producer Martin Bregman (DOG DAY AFTERNOON, CARLITO'S WAY) and directed by Kevin James Dobson (THE MANGO TREE), GOLD DIGGERS does not resort to sex, nudity or violence for thrills. Instead, the film depends on breath-taking scenery, a dare-devil adventure, and a bond of friendship to accomplish its goals. The movie has only a few mild expletives and one exclamatory profanity; however, Jody hints at sexual things in one scene. There is no sex shown, although Jody's mother lives with her boyfriend and they both drink, but neither are shown drinking. A brief fist fight, a bear scare and a girl pinned down by a falling rock are not gratuitous or excessive violence. A feel-good movie, GOLD DIGGERS contains messages of family values without resorting to undesirable elements.
