Truman Show, The
PG
Entertainment: +2 1/2
Acceptability: -1/2

Although Jim Carrey plays the lead role in this rather peculiar story, the film is not a comedy . But with Carrey in it, it has to be light hearted and amusing. He plays Truman Burbank, a cheerful insurance salesman who has always lived in Harbor Island, a small town surrounded by water. Even though Truman is in his 30's and married to a loving wife (Laura Linney), he has never left town. And that's because a famous TV producer (Ed Harris) doesn't want him to leave. It seems that the TV producer has been secretly filming and televising Truman's life ever since he was very young. And the participating mercenary townspeople do their part to keep him in town. The audience isn't let in on this secret until well into the film and the question remains whether Truman will ever discover what's going on and make a break for freedom. It's a unique plot device and many industry insiders think that audiences will be intrigued and amused by it. Their forecast may turn out to be too optimistic.

Being rated PG, this unusual story has relatively few offensive elements. In fact, some limited foul language is about all that mars the film. The language includes several mild and moderate crudities, two s-words and four regular profanities. Truman likes just about everyone and gets along well with his wife. There really aren't any sleazy characters in the film, although the egomaniacal director has secretly deceived and manipulated Truman all of his life. And most of the townspeople are partners in his scheme. In the end, though, justice wins out. This is another example of Hollywood making a fairly decent film, but adding just enough rough language to be offensive.
