Waiting to Exhale

WAITING TO EXHALE is the story of four friends searching and waiting for the perfect man to take their breath away. However, decent men elude them. Angela Bassett is Bernie, a wealthy housewife with two children. After 11 years of marriage, her husband leaves her for another woman. Savannah (Whitney Houston), a television producer, and Robin (Loretta Devine) are both in love with married men. Robin dates other men, though, and her suitors are all selfish, cheating drug addicts and she eventually gets pregnant. To further add to the confusion, Gloria (Lela Rochon) finds out that the man who fathered her son is gay. The only decent man is Russell (Gregory Hines), who befriends Gloria. The story ends with the four women together on New Year's Eve toasting one another. It is a sad and sometimes funny look at the pain of broken relationships and the joy of true friendship. But two hours of whining, cheating women is tiresome.

Seemingly, every few minutes someone is climbing into bed, sometimes with obscured breast nudity or male rear nudity. Sex is graphically discussed and shown. And it is just that sex. The men take from women; it is not loving married couples engaged in true intimacy. In fact, marriage is seen as destructive. Married James (Wesley Snipes) propositions Bernie, justifying it by telling her that his wife is dying of breast cancer. This film just oozes sickness, not of the body but of the soul. In another scene, Gloria finds her 17-year-old son with a girl trying unconventional sex. The characters' vocabulary matches their morals as they utter over 100 crudities and obscenities, plus seven regular profanities. Violence includes a woman hit once in the face and a car is set on fire. The constant sex scenes combined with the unnecessary foul language make WAITING TO EXHALE a movie to mark off your list.
